I’m the Green Girl

Just for the record, I read Wicked a long time ago. When the book was first published. And loved it. The satire, allegory and symbolism are amazing – not to mention that it’s just a great story. So when they produced the musical a few years ago I was instantly intrigued. Not to mention the fact that I love Idina Menzel.

Had to wait a while to actually see the show, but when we finally got tickets I was like a kid in a candy store. Couldn’t sleep the night before. And I’m pretty sure I annoyed my spouse with my almost-constant commentary during the show – similarities to the book, etc.

And then it hit me.

I’m the green girl.

I haven’t led a charmed life. There have been times when I didn’t fit in and was judged or ostracized because of my beliefs, actions or looks. But you know what? Us green girls have got a few things to say too. And the music! Oh my goodness, it’s amazing! The harmonies, rhythms and lyrics touched me in a way that was beyond surreal. It seems like every song can relate to so many situations.

‘Popular?’ any former teenage girl knows about this one.

‘For Good?’ I’ve got two friends that I always think of here. Wonderful women who would and have stuck by me in so many times in my life.

‘I’m Not that Girl?’ Ladies, we’ve all been there.

‘Defying Gravity?’ I’m still waiting for my moment on this one. But as I learn to stand up for myself more, I think I’m getting closer.

I could go on and on. Really. If you’ve seen it or heard the music you know what I mean. And if you haven’t – give it a go. It will touch you too, I promise.
